🍿 Paterson: This movie is a delightful celebration of the ordinary. Adam Driver plays Paterson, a bus driver in Paterson, NJ (purely a coincidence) who writes poetry. As he goes about his routine, navigating his daily route, drinking a single beer at the same bar every night, he finds art in the details. It reminds me of the Flaubert quote: “Be regular and orderly in your life, so that you may be violent and original in your work.” Only, without the violence.
Paterson’s relationship with his wife also endeared this film to me. Laura paints everything black and white and dreams simultaneously of having a successful cupcake business and being a country music star like Patsy Cline. Paterson embraces her ambitions with a mix of mild amusement and supportiveness. She dreams big while he downplays his poetic skill.
