In 2017, @ayjay wrote about how it’s now harder to be forgiven since Christianity doesn’t hold the place in the American zeitgeist that it once did.

When a society rejects the Christian account of who we are, it doesn’t become less moralistic but far more so, because it retains an inchoate sense of justice but has no means of offering and receiving forgiveness.

I had not read the piece, but in 2018, I wrote about something similar, although it was through the lens of the career of Van Halen.
